Review of The September Issue (2009) by Chari S — 27 Oct 2009
Half of the reason I wanted to see this was so I could hear Ladytron's "Destroy Everything You Touch" blaring out of the theatre's digital surround sound system. The song was used very well as a great opening tune playing over footage of Anna Wintour looking as cold as ever as she quielty judges a bevy of stick thin ladies traipsing down the runway of some fashion show.
Then, as the music comes to an end the title card appears. After that, something I never expected: someone in this doc was more entertaining and engaging than Ms. Wintour--Grace Coddington. I don't pretend to be knowledgable about fashion, but watching this woman improvise while down to the zero hour and the results spawned from such a stressed out times was enough to make even the icy Wintour heap praise upon this colleague of hers.
Watching, from beginning to end, the creation of what (at the time) was the largest issue of Vogue was never boring. In fact, when the movie was over, I was ready to see them put together the next months issue.
Great behind-the-scenes look at the goings-on of Vogue magazine that was never less than accessible to even most pedestrian of fashionistas.
