Review of The September Issue (2009) by John M — 20 Mar 2010
It pains me to put aside my deep and abiding contempt for the world of haute couture, but this is an amazing documentary. Certainly, a great deal of the appeal is Wintour the character and the process of making the mammoth September issue, but essentially it is an in-depth examination of Wintour's dynamic with creative director Grace Coddington.
They might be making anything really, because much of the fashion content is mere details for watching two consummate professionals craft something overly elaborate through force of will and refined taste.
I find their taste disagreeable, but I cannot ignore that they wield it with discernment and with considerable vision.
