Review of The September Issue (2009) by Steven W — 29 Apr 2010
For those of you who loved The Devil Wears Prada, you really need to catch this inner glimpse of the publishing world. Regrettably, the presentation of Ms. Wintour and her career definitely call into question the so-called "inner scrutiny" of this docu-film.
Left with her portrayal one gets the feeling that Vogue and fashion really are much ado about nothing. Much more realistic and much more revealing are the treatments of secondary stars such as Andre Leon Talley and Grace Coddington.
The movie should be retitled "Upon These Rocks, I will Build my Kingdom". One is left pondering the choices and lives of Talley and Coddington, amongst others, while questioning whether Cutler's inclusion of Wintour's tantrum at the AIDs benefit was a really a surrundering to his lack of credibly insightful material from his subject.
This is a shame as Jerry Oppenheimer's book on Ms. Wintour, Front Row, reveals a much more visionary, gritty and talented woman. So watch this movie for a good time and to become better acquainted with Talley and Coddington, and read the book afterwards to find out who that annoyingly bland Wintour woman actually is.
