Review of The September Issue (2009) by Jennifer L — 27 Sep 2010
This film is a must for any fashion junkie, of which I am really not, but regardless, I still enjoyed this documentary. It was interesting to go behind the scenes, to meet the people, and learn of the process.
This film tries to focus on Anna, the editor-in-chief, but I think there are really two stars in this film-- her and her Creative Director, Grace. She almost overshadows the cold Anna, and highlights that there may be two types of people in the fashion world-- those who are slaves to it (Anna), and those that honestly love it for all it is (Grace).
This film made me realize that some people make it, though others who are really more talented and deserving get slightly left behind. I was struck at how Anna was in charge, when Grace was really the more experienced, more talented person that was truly in love with fashion.
It was weird to see two former models looking a slight shadow of their former selves (especially Grace), and also to see how others (like her family) felt about Anna's world of fashion. To me, this film really emphasized pride vs.
passion. Intriguing, to be sure.
