Review of The Sentinel (1977) by Jason G — 25 Feb 2008
Great concept...
Great cast...
Great big mess!
Exactly ONE creepy scene in the whole flick... (not including the Beverly D'Angelo masterbation scene which was kinda creepy but not in the way that's good for a HORROR flick).
That one horrific scene is good... but not enough to carry the rest of the film.
Director, Michael Winner (according to lore...) used real, life circus side-show freaks with horrific physical deformities, to finish off the "rising from the dead" scene at the end... (I think I would have preferred to not know that going into the film...that knowledge, somehow "cheapened" the effect for me and I don't know why...).
A real shame that this excellent concept was so badly botched...
I think this film simply suffered from being just a little too "high concept" for the mid-70's to be able to effectively handle...
