Review of The Sense of an Ending (2017) by Madeleine N — 12 Mar 2017
I do recommend the book but not this watered down movie. The story is about a sixty something man startled into remembering the past and learning a shocking history he did not know. The book is brooding, the characters often annoying and frustrating.
....the ending bitter but poetic. The young director however, developed characters just touched upon in the book, on the periphery and created a 'Sense of a Family" filled with cliches and cheap symbolism to tie everything up into a bow at the ending.
Even the narrative at the end is purely made up by the script writer and has nothing to do with the book's ending, which is poetic, off beat and leaves us feeling the disturbing unknowns as we pass through time and space.
Apparently this all either went over the head of the director, or, he just didn't think his audience would be into the profound, so he spoon fed us a heaping tablespoon of saccharine platitudes. A silk dress covered with burlap.
The actors were splendid. Especially young Tony.
