Review of The Selfish Giant (2013) by Mark A — 28 Apr 2014
Clio Barnard is a revelation and I cannot wait to see what she will do next. I have no qualms that this is the best Brit film in a looong time and one of the very few special films that actually made me well up and bawl like a baby.
A testament to the sobering emotional veracity of this simply-told tale that is actually a powerful indictment of capitalism and an ode to loyalty and friendship. Cautionary but never didactic, lyrical yet never indulgent or pretentious, The Selfish Giant strikes all the right emotional notes, without resorting to contrivances, even though it is a tough watch.
By the end, you'll feel drained but rewarded. It deserves all the accolades it has been getting and is that perfect haunting masterpiece/emotional tour de force you've waited so long for....this should be on everyone's must-see or bucket list!
