Review of The Selfish Giant (2013) by Kevin C — 15 Oct 2014
Swapping Barnsley for Bradford, this is Kes for the 21st century. And like Ken Loach this is gritty realism and deprivation. It is heartbreaking and simply brilliant.
The two kids playing Arbor and Swifty, are an odd couple; and as good as any movie double-act you've ever seen.
This world is bleak with a capital B. It is an amazing looking film, with an almost post-apocalyptic feel. Unemployment is rife fuelling ferocious, and sometimes dangerous competition in the scrap business.
But like Loach Barnard manages to still find humour. And indeed in many ways this has child-like, fairy tale remnants. Don't let that put you off, this is a stunning film.
