Powerful direction and impeccable acting (and from an impressively young pair of stars too) give the film a total bleakness that is almost upsetting. But most impressive is how the film blindsides you with complete and utter emotion too - and that is a feat that makes the bleakness worth bearing with for those who aren't sure where the movie is going.
