Review of The Selfish Giant (2013) by Zack F — 12 May 2014
Disclaimer: The Selfish Giant is not about a heartfelt robot. I'm not fully sure why I thought there was going to be some friendly robots, (I'm assuming it is the title similarity to Iron Giant), but I was fairly disappointed when I found out the opposite.
Not only was there no robots, there wasn't even a giant. Instead, there was just two hard-life gibberish speaking British kids that skipped school to become metal scrappers. Once I got past the lack of family friendly magical elements, I was able to get fully wrapped up in the story of these two troubled friend trying to find a life that will make them happy; horses and stealing wires.
These boys have a very fleshed out and real relationship that forms a great depiction of youth friendship. Their bond brings a sincere heart and soul to the story; which makes up for the lack of giant scrap metal robots.
Those metaphorical titles will get you every time.
