Review of The Seduction of Misty Mundae (2004) by Doctor S — 08 Dec 2012

Much more sensitivity than you'd expect from Seduction Cinema which specializes in goofy comedy parsed by heaps o' nudity. With this one you may need to double-check the box to dispel the belief you're watching a Swedish coming-of-age story from the early '70s. Misty Mundae unsurprisingly has the title role and at an experienced 24 years still easily pulls off the innocent teenager who moves in temporarily with her Aunt Inga played by Julian Wells, who can't be more than 5 years older in real life. Never mind, the pairing works as Misty experiences her sexual awakening.

As I offered in the opening sentence, there is a large measure of maturity in this production. The acting is effective and intrinsic to Misty's journey of self-discovery, the script is considerate with some meaningful dialogue, and the soundtrack includes a few B-grade indie soft rock songs which is actually a big step up from the usual cheesy instrumentals that sound like they were recorded in the 1980s. In other words, it's almost as if there was some effort to treat the subject seriously! Of course, if you excised the nude scenes the run time would be cut in half, so let's not get carried away. The climactic encounter (how's that for a double-entendre, thankyouverymuch) between Mundae & Wells alone lasts a stimulating 16 minutes, where it's revealed that 'Aunt' Inga is thankfully not actually related to Misty. Damn, now I've spoiled the movie.
