Review of The Secret of NIMH (1982) by William Z — 20 Apr 2011
One of the best animated movies that I have ever seen, hands down. I'd even go as far to say that it rivals "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame," or even "Beauty and the Beast" in terms of its artistry, beautiful story, and fantastic characters.
In less than 90 minutes, we follow the timid Miss Brisby, widow of the hailed mouse, Johnathan Brisby. She embarks on an adventure into the dark and grim tale to save her home from a plow, to help heal her ailing son, and to discover her inner courage.
With a wonderful voice cast, animation that creates a fantastic atmosphere, and a villain as cold as his surroundings, we become a part of the story. Whether it's the thorny hideaway of the rats of NIMH, or the confrontation with the Great Owl, our fears become Miss Brisby's fears, but she guides us through them, giving us courage as well.
Even though it's a dark film, I would still say wholeheartedly that children would love it. It brought out my inner child, and I can't wait to watch it again. Rent this film from Netflix!
