Years before Disney's golden age of the 1990's, The Secret of NIMH completely revolutionized the possibilities of animated storytelling. Abandoning all traditional cartoon attributes, the film instead takes a mature, dark, and even philosophical approach to the medium.
Asking tough questions concerning the animalistic nature of man and the connection between the natural, the scientific, and the unknown make this a genuinely thought-provoking and even unsettling film, but one that is so beautifully animated and featuring such a captivating central character that it becomes impossible to look away.
