Review of The Secret of NIMH (1982) by Rane P — 09 Jun 2012
A widowed field mouse seeks medical advice about her ailing son. She is told her son must rest, but the spring thaw is arriving which means they must soon leave their home in order to avoid the farmer's plows.
With the assistance of some other animals which live in the field she is able to temporarily disable the tractor, but needs a more permament solution to save her family. When the wise owl learns she is the late Johnanthan Brisby's wife, he instructs her to contact a local nest of rats.
Her husband was in the same experimental hospital as the rats, and through science they were made super-smart. The mouse Johnanathan had ensured the rats' escape, so they aid his widow. A very good story which I remember loving as a child, especially some of the scarier moments.
It's retained its charm and is one of the many winners from 1982.
