One of my all time favorite animated films; Don Bluth's "The Secret of NIMH" remains a gorgeous looking picture, as well as a well-told story with surprisingly good voice acting. The film also respects children by not dumbing down the intelligence of its subject matter, yet it doesn't overwhelm them by being needlessly dark and scary.
And yes, it is a dark piece. But it's done in more of an artistic and tasteful manner- more of a darkness of reality, considering what it was about. And with this provided, the film deserves respect for being honest, yet reserved.
It doesn't sugarcoat, but it doesn't become self-indulgent by going too over the top with its grim nature. It's a fantastic feat of animated glory that deserves every good word said about it!
