Review of The Secret of NIMH (1982) by Catherine S — 07 Jul 2011
The Secret of NIMH is one of Don Bluth's best movies, and it shows. It's beautifully animated with an original storyline, wonderful characters, and just a memorable movie that's just as much for kids as it is for adults.
The Secret of NIMH follows Mrs. Brisby, a mouse widow once married to the great Jonathan Brisby. Now living alone with her four children, Mrs. Brisby must deal with her youngest son Timmy having pneumonia as the "Dragon" (the tractor) is ready to plow the field they live in. Mrs. Brisby must find the rats of NIMH, as well as uncover her late husband's mysterious past with the help of the leader of the rats of NIMH Nicodemus.
The animation for this movie is outstanding. Often I thought I was watching a painting and not an animated movie. The voice acting is well done, and I enjoyed the characters. Well, almost all the characters. *cough*Jeremy*cough*. My only complaint is the introduction of a villain that only sticks around for ten minutes before getting killed by another characters we barely know.
So yes, this is a wonderful movie. But, I recommend this for older kids as some of the scenes can get a little intense and may scare some younger kids. But otherwise, The Secret of NIMH is a great film that I really enjoyed. (Real rating: 99%).
