Review of The Secret of NIMH (1982) by Forrest P — 25 Jul 2011
I think I remember reading the story this little movie was based on, but it may have just been the novelization of the movie. Regardless, the film is a quaint little animated film that is pretty harmless.
It does have some minor social commentary on animal testing, and there's a little bit that almost paints a farmer as the villain, but nothing too heavy handed like other kid movies have attempted (see also, 'FernGully: The Last Rainforest' and 'Happy Feet').
The animation is old-school - which makes sense, since the film is from the early 80s - and the characters are colorful, but not overblown like so many from today's animated films. The plot is pretty standard, but I liked that the main villain was a cat.
Cats are perfect villains - selfish, obsessive compulsive, temperamental, and, in this case, hideous. It's certainly not in the category of best animated films ever, but it's a nice little distraction.
