Review of The Secret of Kells (2009) by David Ray G — 21 Sep 2010
I'm rather disappointed by this animated film. The colors, style and aesthetics are quite fantastic - an eye-feast. When Brendan enters the forest for the first time there are such beautiful sequences that I was quite drifted off my feet.
But by the end, I didn't particularly care for it - especially not for its theme: the combination of Irish Christianity (Brendan and "the book" he so worked hard for) and of Pagan origins (the forest creatures, etc.
) I generally tend to turn away from religious-themed movies, and I guess that's my major issue here, when I otherwise enjoyed it. Aisling and the kitty were simply adorable, as was of course the technical elements of it, but I was underwhelmed by it.
