Review of The Secret of Kells (2009) by Jason G — 21 Sep 2010
The Secret of Kells is an exercise in style over substance, the pen being mightier than the sword. With its slight runtime, the bare-bones story barely has a chance to take off in any interesting directions, but along the way, we are introduced to some wonderful characters and truly breath-taking animation. Brendan and Aisling (I could've sworn she said "Ashley" in the film) are a wonderful, comical pair. Their brief scenes together are where the film really grabs your attention. Unfortunately, they don't get much time onscreen together. Still, the voicework of Evan McGuire and Christen Mooney deserves much praise. They are perfect fits for their parts.
The main narrative thrust about the completion of a mystical book is interesting enough, but it pales next to the playful friendship that we only get a brief glimpse of.
