Review of The Secret of Kells (2009) by Parker M — 21 Sep 2010
I prefer how Outlander combined fantasy/myth with history. As animation, this is pretty much pre-Betty Boop and Looney Tunes, more like reading a picture book than a cartoon. About the only impressive elements of it are the facial expressions and eyes.
It works as an introduction for kids to the conflicts between Ireland and Norway and northern countries bordering the Atlantic in general, but to give it an Oscar nomination would be delusional unless there are so few great animations around that it gets added simply to fill out the list rather than adding the even worse Princess and the Frog.
The only 2009 animations that are worth seeing or awards are, in order: Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs, Planet 51, Up, $9.99, and Battle for Terra. Unfortunately, a very short list.
