Review of The Secret of Kells (2009) by Sean C — 16 Oct 2011
Disappointing might be the best summery for this film. Without having a story nor a great approach to reviewing this I will just have to go in guns blazing, breaking down the positives and negative aspects.
To be nice I feel like I will review the positives parts first.. The first thing I need to talk about it the art style. Clearly when watching an animated film the first thing your eyes will cling to is the style, and yeah this movie has it. With the bizarre and interesting paintings it is a sight to see. This constant repeating of you water paintings are easily the best part of the film always watching the background. Now with that said it is not the most beautiful animated movie you will ever see I can thin of a few movies that take priority such as "Spirited Away" and "L'illusionniste". Then I got to thinking the movie does deserve some recondition but while thinking it is still not the most beautiful animated film of the year nor best because of, Ponyo being an amazing art experience and the best animated film of 2009 was Fantastic Mr. Fox. (please take in to consideration that first this is my opinion and that you know that Fantastic Mr. Fox should won not Up!) But it has a story that is on the same wavelength as Ponyo and I am saving that for the negatives. I know I am being a broken record here but the first scene in the forest is amazing if the rest of movie was like that I would of been thrilled with a movie like this but it is just not to be. This forest scene is full of hope and is designed perfectly....
Soooooo yea I do not think I am forgetting any loose end of where the movie does things right, I could say something but then I would be giving away part of the movie and if I even semi respect the movie I will not spoil it. Now a "movie" like Robo-Geisha deserves no respect ( and yes I am still bitter that I paid for that....).
Now on to the negatives, the story. Umm it is like I do not know what to do for this because I really do not want to give anything away. ( while writing this sentence I realized I like Dylon Dog more than this). The story feels like a straight still from some early Disney movies and also I direct rip of of The Secret of NIMH. Oh W8 the titles are sooooo dam similar. I mean the basic plot of not want to except the idea of magic and being so against the idea and restricting anyone from even exploiting it. I mean the basic plot is just nothing special. Am I the only one to think that the voice of Bradon was a head ache a mixture of that high pitched voice, screaming and Irish accent was a bit to much for me, ( and I am Irish...).
Damn it out of time I think I will be back for this one tonight.
Back umm I have read what I just through together this afternoon and besides the extreme amount the spelling and grammar errors I feel I have hit all the key points that I wanted to say.
Final Verdict, I really am having difficulty giving this a score. I mean I know others will love this where I do not. So I guess will just give it something towards the middle of grading 60% out of 100% just so it is on the boarder line of fresh and negative.
