Review of The Secret of Kells (2009) by Jacob K — 20 Feb 2015
The Secret of Kells is an absolute masterpiece in every since of the word. A film that showcases more than any other animated film the power of the medium to help tell a story about the importance of art and culture in a way that is completely universal on the level of the best Hayao Miyazaki.
The visuals are never their to just to look pretty but to accentuate an emotion or heighten a point in the story. It is absolutely refreshing in a medium dominated by talking animals, pop culture references, toilet humor, and celebrity voices.
Instead it tells a classic story of defying authority and journeying into a strange new world beyond your borders in such a fresh way that it actually scares me to think how it would have been told by any other animation studio.
If you have not seen this film I urge you to fix that as soon as possible.
