Review of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) by Joshua R — 26 Jul 2014
I really like the designs in this movie, which are very grand. It's just that the concept of Mitty imagining things starts to wear out its welcome.
There are a lot of Walter Mitty's imaginations in the movie, all of them very over exaggerated and either hit or miss for me (my favorite being the Benjamin Button scene, which makes absolutely no sense). The problem with having so many "drifting off" scenes is that you start to understand the pattern. The shock value of these moments starts to lessen as the movie progresses. The concept is also a bit inconsistent as well. Sometimes his imaginations don't effect Walter's actions and sometimes they do.
However, as I previously mentioned, I love the design and look of the film. The colors are nice and I love all of the different locations they shot. The humor is also pretty good. The characters this movie has are also quirky and fun to watch run around. So the movie has that going for it.
What's also weird is how real the movie tries to feel. It takes a realistic approach and then adds parts that make absolutely no sense (the guy from E-Harmony calling Mitty when he's climbing a giant mountain! REALLY!).
There are things to like and dislike about The Secret LIfe of Walter Mitty. It's no secret that it has some problems with the plot, but with a good cast and grand design this movie is an enjoyable ride.
