Review of The Secret Life of Bees (2008) by Ashton M — 16 May 2009
Though the critics didn't really seem to like this one, I gotta say, I loved it. But, I'm a sucker for heartwarming dramas, great casts, good messages, characters who struggle with searches for truth and history, and period films. This movie had all of those. Dakota Fanning (I've been a fan ever since she starred in I Am Sam) was amazing. She hasn't done a major picture in a while (not since she's grown a little anyway) and she was awesome. I myself would be intimidated with amazing co-stars such as Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson and Sophie Okonedo, but she held her own. Critics say the story was "too sweet" but I don't believe that. When did dead relatives, domestic abuse, rampant racism, depression and suicide become "sweet"? Excuse the characters in the story for choosing to remain strong despite the shit that was going on in their homes and in America. Anyway, you know me, I think "what the critics say" is WAY overrated.
Each member of the cast conveyed their roles with passion and strength. The acting was probably the best part of the movie. And the story was touching, poignant, lovely.
