Review of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015) by Chris W — 01 Mar 2015
As full of charm as the first film, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is easily watchable as long as the seasoned stars are on screen. Sadly too much of the film centres around the fairly flimsy saga of Sonny & Sunaina's wedding and the real estate investment of the titular property.
As charismatic as Dev Patel is, this is just a tiresome plot device to excuse more Maggie Smith acerbic one liners, sentimental outpourings from Judi Dench and jolly japes from the rest of the senior cast.
But the latter is what made the first film such a hit and when it's allowed to play out its just as enjoyable again (there are actually more laugh out loud moments in the sequel). I just wish they'd focussed more on the elements the audience enjoyed first time around and less on the superfluous plot.
Overall a gentle, untaxing film, that is perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
