Review of The Searchers (1956) by Alice P — 12 Apr 2009
Massively overrated, as both a western and an indictment of racism. as the former, it's too folksy and sanitized to interest modern audiences. as the latter, it's so condescending and conservative that it itself skirts the line of racism.
when you cast artificially tanned anglos in the roles of native americans instead of, you know, ACTUAL NATIVE AMERICANS, your condemnations of prejudice tend to ring rather hollow.
