Review of The Searchers (1956) by John E — 14 Jun 2010
My first John Ford movie opened my eyes to his powerful use of landscapes and framing to expertly depict the Old West. John Wayne's complex and conflicted Ethan Edwards is a fascinating study of differing views on how to treat people.
A nice attempt to depict a different side of racism that falls just short of perfection due to some silly subplot with marriage and Mose. In addition, some of the dialogue and drama is histrionic and overplayed.
But I can look past that and see what Ford was trying to do and what he mostly succeeds in accomplishing.
