Review of The Searchers (1956) by Alex H — 07 Jan 2013
Boy, what a moldy artifact of a genre. I can see why bitter old white curmudgeons love John Wayne. I was prepared to get past the racism, the machismo, the misogyny, the laughable patriotism, etc, and just go with the flow.
The Searchers has some great moments and some phenomenal cinematography - though I'll never get used to early color film, it's just way too saturated and harsh. I appreciate the epic scope of the story, but it's really piecemeal and the characters' decisions come outta nowhere, so I couldn't really get invested.
It's just a bunch of stuff happening in sequence, it never really added up for me.
