Incredible performances. Not just from Bardem but the whole of the supporting cast. Amenabar improves upon his American mistep The Others, but still fumbles a couple of passes, notably the insistance on numerous montages and some over intrusive pieces of score.
But he does handle the drama and weight perfectly, never falling into sentimentality, while keeping the film moving.
