Review of The Sea Inside (2004) by Paul K — 24 Mar 2008
A very beautiful, moving, and controversial film. Euthanasia appears to be a hot subject as much now as it was 4 years ago. As I watched, I couldn't help but see equally valid arguments on both sides, however the global trend in human values seems to be evolving more and more towards an acceptance of a person's decision to discontinue their life or the life of their unborn child.
What I will say is that this film was ten times better than The Diving Bell and the Butterfly which tackles similar issues and challenges. The imagination of Ramon Sampedro was one of vivid and beautiful flying scenes, as well as smoldering moments of passion between he and his beautiful (both inside and out) caretakers.
To me, this was immeasurably better than the tawdry daydreams of his french counterpart, Mr. Bauby, who could only dream up a seafood banquet fantasy in addition to his conjured, self-absorbed memories.
In my opinion, skip the latter despite the hype and see this one instead. You won't regret it.
