Review of The Sea Inside (2004) by Rob . — 31 Mar 2008
I wanted to see more of Javier Bardem, and I did. Mar Adentro is a hard watch, as it touches on themes that a lot of us can be fortunate enough not to have to explore in our lives.
Even more outstanding than the Spanish dialogue is its translation, as nothing appears to be truly lost. The words are often poignant, and the visuals both desolate and uplifting. Bardem's performance is outstanding, and you would never guess his age through the outstanding make-up job that's been applied here.
There is no right day to watch The Sea Inside: one needs only a heart, and attentive ears. It's a gripping story, whose outcome can only be, in the end, bittersweet. A story about life and love, death and departure, and packing your bags in the hopes that forever will be merciful.
