Review of The Sea Inside (2004) by Ben W — 27 Mar 2009
A difficult film on several levels. of course, the subject matter is difficult to accept. "right to die" movements are always controversial. while I find myself firmly on the side of the right to choice, I also have issues with the way this film goes about proselytizing.
the best thing about the film aside from another gut wrenching performance by bardem as well as from mabel rivera is the editing. amenabar is technically very apt. but that does not a great director make.
I think it is good to know the story of ramon sampedro but it seemed to put him on a pedestal. the film digresses frequently into preachy, issue-centered dialog. if I wanted that I would just turn on c-span.
