Review of The Scorpion King (2002) by Francisco H — 06 Dec 2008
Having apparently given one of the greatest 5 minute performances in a film...EVER, studio executives decided hastily to cash in on the rising popularity of WWF (I refuse to acknowledge the name WWE) superstar The Rock by giving him his own spin-off for a character he played in the Mummy Returns.
The Rock plays Mathayus, a lone assassin who has been elected to save a kingdom from a ruthless ruler by killing his sorcerer (Kelly Hu, from Jason Takes Manhattan). As luck would have it though, The Rock starts to fall for her, and then they band together with Michael Clark Duncan's big scary ass to take on the evil ruler.
This film has hints of a big scale Hercules or Xena show. While it manages to entertain, as well as serve as a great stepping stone for The Rock (now Dwayne Johnson) to move on to bigger and better films, it's still kinda silly.
Purely popcorn entertainment.
