Review of The Science of Sleep (2006) by Alex C — 12 Aug 2009
I did want to like this little romance tale, with all its cute and quirky cardboard and felt special effects and a bittersweet little love story. Unfortunately there is always something inherently annoying about Gondry's films which really comes to the fore in this, his most personal feeling work.
He seems to be the sort of visual artist who needs a third party to rein him in (eg Kaufmans Eternal Sunshine script). As it stands, despite a couple of good lead performances and endearing, truthful moments, the quirkiness just distanced me from the characters and emotion.
