Review of The Science of Sleep (2006) by Steph O — 09 Aug 2010
"Le Science des Reves" is such a beautiful movie. I don't think I've ever smiled that much in a movie. I smiled, I laughed... I didn't cry - but almost. Michel Gondry is a great director.
Gael Garcia Bernal is a phenomenal actor. The most versatile actor on the planet, in my opinion. It was no shock to me that in "La Science des Reves" his character was completely different from any of the other characters I've seen him play.
GGB could play any character. ANY. In this he plays Stephane. Stephane is a dreamer, in every sense of the word. He's creative and child-like, but very shy. Stephane is so consumed by his dreams he has difficulty separating dreams from reality.
In more than one scene Stephane believes he is asleep and dreaming, when he is actually awake. There will be a certain kind of people who won't like this movie. They'll say, "I don't get it.
.." or "Is that Stephane guy CRAZY or something?". But I doubt those people will ever see this movie, so that's okay I think. Anyone who has ever been shy, anyone who has ever wished their dreams were reality, and anyone with a heart will love "Le Science des Reves" (The Science of Sleep).
