Review of The Science of Sleep (2006) by Ryan T — 08 Aug 2012
A massive component to movie-watching is enjoying what's being broadcast; falling into a gentle lull without the product losing its sense of entertaining mystery. Writer-director Michel Gondry's "Science of Sleep" basically defies all that, to positive and negative extents.
"The Science of Sleep" does not attract anything subversive enough to make sense of it as mind-bending, but without enough evidence to completely portray a dramatic romantic relationship. Really, it's a strange, visual-heavy personal piece about a man unable to separate the fact and fiction of his own reality, a trait that some could say defines Gondry as a person and as a filmmaker.
