Review of The School of Rock (2003) by Adam S — 10 Nov 2013
Jack Black's love letter to classic rock sits closely to my heart, since I too share the passion for the axe-gods of the 70's-90's. And this film manages to be touching and incredibly funny, and is one of the crowning jewels in Black's film career.
Also starring Joan Cusack, Mike White, Sarah Silverman and a host of child characters including Miranda Cosgrove, this film became an instant cult classic due to its "Stick it to the man" attitude, its fun soundtrack and its brand of humour. Unfortunately, many storylines with the children characters had to be left unexplored (presumably due to time constraints), such as the breaking of a stereotype by giving a girl the bass (sad that this is a stereotype really). But overall, this film is fun, and that's due to Black and the genius of director Richard Linklater.
