Review of The Scarlet Letter (1995) by Emeraldsnake 1 — 20 Oct 2007
I'm all for films taking on their own vision when they have been based on a book. this however doesn't extend so far as to allow for a film that completely alters the plot, characters, and intention of the book! the scarlet letter is a novel that delves into the personal and psychological consequences of sin.
from the madness of dimsdale's hidden sin, to hester's attempts at atonement, the scarlet letter should be a study in self-destruction. this film however champions the lovers as though they are resisting a religious dictatorship.
this runs completely opposite to the intentions of the book and the film feels shallow as a result. tsk tsk.
