Review of The Scarlet Claw (1944) by Ryan V — 15 Mar 2012
Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) travel to Canada in order to investigate a series of confounding and brutal murders. The plot thickens when Holmes discovers that the perp is a master of disguise who could possibly be anyone in the community.
The Scarlet Claw will annoy purists since it isn't based on a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and it also takes place in the then-contemporary date of 1944. Still, this is a well-acted movie with a genuinely interesting mystery plot.
It's also the strongest of the later Holmes movies featuring the team of Rathbone and Bruce.
