Review of The Savages (2007) by Carrie B — 27 Sep 2008
We considered this a must-rent after seeing previews for it on the Juno and Music Within DVDs. Once Netflix finally sent it, we sat down knowing that something good was in store. Bottom line here: This movie was hard to watch.
It was far from bad. In fact, it was certainly the 'something good' we knew we'd get, but the subject matter of dealing with a parent going into a nursing home hit home with my husband and me.
It made us think of our parents, the grandparents we cared for or watched decline, and it made us start want to plan our twilight years ahead of time so our kids don't have to. The acting was very well done and there were some breaks in the tension for laughter, as well as a few "oh no s/he didn't" moments.
It's quite redeeming and the ending doesn't automatically get sappy-sweet but is instead well-resolved. I certainly recommend a viewing.
