Review of The Savages (2007) by Brad G — 23 Jan 2009
Right away, this film earns marks for dealing with the tough subject of nursing homes and the uncertainty of putting someone there. The acting from Hoffman and Linney is super as you would expect--they perfectly capture that combination of annoyance, guilt, and the feeling that they are doing the only reasonable thing.
This film certainly doesn't downgrade nursing homes, but it presents them in a fairly realistic light. There are also a few really funny moments in the move, my favorite being "the tennis match.
