Review of The Savages (2007) by Josh R — 06 Jun 2009
A film covering the responsibilities children have, in order to take care of their ailing parents. Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman play brother and sister taking care of their father who suffers from dementia. It is a brutally depressing film as it looks at the pain and anguish of all parties involved. However, depressing it may be it is peppered with humor and love. Philip Bosco plays the father and you cannot help but feel for a man in his position. He concedes his ability to take care of himself but still has the mental prowess to feel humiliation, fear, anxiety and anger. This film also covers the varied relationships that Hoffman and Linney have with their significant others. Sometimes the relationships we have are the ones we are supposed to be out of and the relationships we had are the ones that we fight to get back. All-in-all, this film is beautiful as human nature is beautiful -- hard to watch but remarkable. Check it out if you haven't already.
Cheers.
Josh.
