Laura Linney (Wendy Savage) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Jon Savage) as seriously damaged, sad sack siblings caring for their estranged (and rapidly declining) father. Linney's nomination was well-deserved, and what a great group to be nominated in, looking back at the list that year.

Wendy and Jon are cliche, but they are well written and skillfully acted. The film walks a thin line: it could have come across as exactly the sort of white, middle class, self indulgent, self-centered whining Wendy worries her play might be.

It is, instead, emotionally engaging and surprisingly optimistic.
