Review of The Savages (2007) by Trystan C — 23 Jul 2012
I love "real" movies. By that I mean, movies that deal with their subject matter honestly and realistically. But there is something to say for a movie that depicts life a little too realistically to the point where becomes depressing and almost unbearable to watch. That is the case with "The Savages.".
Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman are fantastic playing estranged siblings who are drawn together to deal with their father, who is slowly falling into the grips of dementia, while also dealing with their own problems. It is a bleak and straightforward look at the burdens of growing up and the dregs of what middle-aged life can be, one that this 20 year-old viewer does not want to acknowledge just yet.
