Review of The Savages (2007) by Existen Z — 14 Dec 2009
The Savages is a great independent drama from writer/director Tamara Jenkins. Jenkins script is tight and is full of brilliant dialogue. The actors, Laura Linney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman bring her characters to life.
I really did not see this film as a comedy, but rather a dark drama about life, it's a very dark outline on topics like estranged siblings, senility, and getting old and dying. It's one of the most real film's I have ever seen.
It prides itself on it's realistic characters and the tough situations they find themselves in. Hoffman shines, he has a great small and compelling performance. This is one of the most underrated movie's I have ever seen and I was suprised at how little attention this great indie attracted.
It's definately one of the better indie's of recent.
