Review of The Sapphires (2012) by Manu S — 18 Aug 2012
An enjoyable and entertaining movie about a group of aboriginal women singers who entertain American troops in Vietnam, but given all the hype, I was a little disappointed overall. The singing was brilliant and made up for the "over acting" by most of the cast.
The story was good and inspirational, but also quite unrealistic at times. I felt that it was far too superficial in depicting the social issues around the singers at that time in Australia's history.
I found it hard to decide whether it was meant to be comedy, drama or both, because whenever there was a serious dramatic moment, the over-acting made it seem comedic. Despite all this, I was glad to have seen it, although its not at a level where it could be put up as an example of quality Australian film making.
