Review of The Sapphires (2012) by Daniel C — 25 Dec 2012
This is a groovy film, especially for a small Australian production (mind you, it IS backed by the Weinstein brothers, so, take that as you will) based on Aboriginal Australians on a trip of a lifetime.
Deborah Mailman, a veteran of Australian television and theatre, is typically strong, while former Australian Idol runner up Jessica Mauboy shows that she's got a brilliant singing voice when singing outside of her recording modern R&B genre.
Meanwhile, Chris O'Dowd, the Irish star of "The IT Crowd", continues his transition to legitimate Hollywood star, which is fantastic to see.
But I was impressed, as I was earlier this year seeing her performance in the ABC TV series "Redfern Now" earlier this year, by newcomer Shari Sebbens. She had more to do than Mauboy on the acting front, and she handled it beautifully.
The soundtrack is brilliant as well, but the storyline itself is a tad cliched, particularly the *SPOILER*.
Scene where O'Dowd's character is "killed". You know how that one ends before it happens, which is sad.
Still, a very solid Aussie film, though I didn't enjoy it as much as Australia's 2011 big offering "Red Dog".
