Review of The Santa Clause 2 (2002) by Corey C — 26 Dec 2011
The original was of course the better of the two. The third I don't even count. But, this film had quite a strong premise. Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) has to find a wife in 28 days or he has to give up the role of Santa Claus.
Scott's son, Charlie (Eric Lloyd) is on the naughty list for standing up to his icy principle, Carol Newman (Elizabeth Mitchell), who seems rough on the outside but is soft inside. When Scott comes down from the North Pole to visit Carlie and set him straight, he falls for Principle Newman.
The film was great... up until the part where an enlarged, toy Santa, created to replace Scott tries to overthrow Christmas by planning to give the whole world coal. He is far from threatening with his army of toy soldiers, enlarged to the point where they can't even fight back against the revolting elves.
This film had a strong love premise and the "Charlie being on the naughty list" was a cool twist too. But... why like so many Disney movies these days did this movie have to throw in a villain with a lame scheme to try and please the children viewers.
The magic of the first film was about Scott and his son trying to remain together despite others trying to separate them to keep Charlie from a crazy father who "thinks" he's Santa. This film had to throw in a villain and it was totally unnecessary.
I give it three stars due to my appreciation for the love story and the acting by Tim Allen and Elizabeth Mitchell. But... not one of those three stars goes towards the villain toy Santa side-plot.
