Review of The Sandlot (1993) by John V — 30 Aug 2010
This movie works because the kids seem like real kids, not some adult's idea of what kids would look like. They swear. They scuffle a little and thy're naive enough to think that a big huge dog is a killer.
While the third act goes to Home Alone-slapstick humor, the first hour of the movie is great as we are introduced to all the characters and see their misadventures from using chewing tobacco on an amusement park ride with gross results to getting the hot lifeguard to lock lips with the geeky kid.
There is also no "big game" ending. The "big game" comes half-way through the movie and is over in no time. This isn't that type of sports movie. It's about kids who loved playing baseball all summer without their parents interfering.
