It's become increasingly clear to me that I just don't care for coming of age movies. Stand By Me, Dazed and Confused, American Graffiti, Empire Records, A Christmas Story: I've disliked them all.

The Sandlot is no exception. The problem with movies of this type is that they rely on nostalgia to sell the story, which is lame. They are fairly enjoyable to an extent, but they never rise above that simple "remember when we were young" type humor, which isn't usually humor at all, and in many cases lack any kind of adult theme.

In the rare cases where a coming of age movie actually is intelligent while still being silly (Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Almost Famous, Sleepers), it turns out well. Perhaps that makes me a jaded adult who can't remember what it was like to be a child, but shit, I like to have my mind challenged a bit.

There are plenty of family friendly movies that do that.
